Musical Mandarin? Maybe...2009-08-26
Local parenting blogger, branding expert, self described recovering punk rocker and soon to be mom of two Sally Cox-Mulvenney wrote a great piece for SchoolFu this week about the connection between perfect pitch, Mandarin and music learning. Great thoughts from fellow Beijing Kindermusik educator Kristin Koh and some ideas from our very own Sarah Peel Li as well.

World Rabies Day 2008: Awareness is the Best Defense against Rabies2008-09-06
Did you know that 3,380 persons died of rabies in China in 2007? And that while rabies is the oldest and deadliest disease known to mankind, its completely preventable!
According to the Ministry of Health., rabies is on the rise in China with the majority of transmissions coming from dog bites. Less than 10% of dogs in China are vaccinated against rabies.
The World Rabies Day initiative is a great opportunity to remind all pet owners to have their pets rabies vaccinated. The International Center for Veterinary Services is hosting a rabies vaccination drive for all pets from September 20 to 28, 2008.
More information on officially designated animal vaccination hospitals in Beijing can be found on the ICVS web site: www.ICVSASIA.com. Tel: (8610) 8456-1939/40/41. Email: ICVS_CHINA@yahoo.com.
Please call or email ICVS for more information about rabies in China and how to protect your family and your pets against this fatal but preventable disease. We invite everyone to join us in Making Rabies History!

Classes Canceled Thursday May 29, 20082008-05-27
The Our Time, Village and Imagine That! classes usually held at the Eton Palm Springs Campus are canceled tomorrow Thursday May 29, 2008. Details regarding make up classes and rescheduling will be e-mailed as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Eton's Palm Springs Campus has confirmed that they have a single case of Hand Foot and Mouth disease in their school. The strain has not been confirmed at this time, and it is too early to tell if this is an isolated case or something more significant.

The Eton Schools are working with health officials to ensure the safety of its staff, students and the community. The affected classroom has been closed, and the entire school facility is being disinfected today. At this time the school remains open, but staff is advising families to keep their children home until they have a better understanding of the situation.

These are not easy decisions to make, and I want to make sure that our Kindermusik with Sarah families understand that this is not an emergency situation. Whatever I do, guide my decisions on one basic principle: What is best for the child? In this case, that is canceling until I feel we can provide a safe and secure learning environment.

International
Festival Chorus and Children's Choir are proud to present a fully staged production of the the musical smash hit Oliver! by Lionel Bart. We are delighted to welcome west-end star Michael Sterling in the role of Fagin returning to Beijing following his appearance in the 2003 production of 'Lady In The Dark' at the 21st Century Theatre. Sterling has previously played the role of Phantom in Andrew Lloyd-Weber's 'Phantom of the Opera' and Jean Valjean from the global phenomenon 'Les Miserables'.

This timeless production is directed under the vision of Beijing resident Kemin Zhang who aims to fuse together Victorian London with developing Beijing. Costumes and set reflect this juxtaposition of two powers as they rise to dominance though at different periods in history. IFC conductor Nicholas Smith wields his baton as Musical Director with a cast of 38 children, 23 adults and full orchestra.

We are pleased to use this production to formally debut the International Festival Children's Choir in Beijing. The children's choir was founded in 2006 for auditioned singers aged 7-13 and, after successful concerts around town, we now have members from more than seven schools including ISB, WAB, Dulwich College, BSB, The French School, YCIS, BCIS, Harrow International School Beijing, Fang Cao Di and Xing Long Primary Schools.

Come join us as we bring this vibrant musical to life and we're sure you'll "Consider Yourself, One of Us!"
Enterovirus 71 (Ev71) Information2008-05-06
An intestinal virus called enterovirus 71, or EV71 outbreak has been reported in Anhui Province. This virus causes a variant of hand, foot, and mouth disease. Over 3300 cases and at least 22 deaths have been reported in Fuyang City in Anhui Province. All of the deaths were children less than 6 years old and most were under 2 years of age. A few additional cases have been confirmed in Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province. Hubei Province and Hong Kong have also reported a few cases.

The symptoms of EV 71 are similar but more severe than the common hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Typically, it starts with a generalized illness, poor appetite, and sore throat, followed by a fever, rashes on the hands, feet, and buttocks along with mouth ulcers. HFMD is often confused with foot-and-mouth disease of cattle,
sheep, and swine. Although the names are similar, the two diseases are not related at all and are caused by different viruses.

Infection is spread from person to person by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of infected persons. A person is most contagious during the first week
of the illness. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
